Opportunity Details

SBP Volunteer Experience

Description:  we are working in homes from San Juan to Yabucoa and groups may be placed in any site to be able to provide the impact and support to communities as needed. We ask all volunteer groups to have their own transportation and be prepared to possibly be split up, although we will, of course, do our best to assign them to homes near each other. Final site assignments are emailed the Wednesday before the scheduled volunteer opportunity. That being said, construction is a very changing environment and we appreciate your flexibility should we need to reassign you to a new site due to the urgency of construction, weather delays, etc.

We offer volunteers full training on construction tasks, supervision, equipment, and a continuous supportive atmosphere; no previous construction experience or knowledge necessary. The tasks to be performed can include cleaning, scraping, building and, painting walls. They also include laying tiles, installing the internal part of the roofs and the proper handling of debris, all as required by the project. The suggested clothing is one that provides security and comfort, what is essential is to wear closed shoes, such as tennis shoes or construction boots.

A regular volunteer day is 8:30am-4:30pm Monday through Friday and Saturdays in special occasions. Exceptions include if the group will be working on sites in Yabucoa, in which case the hours are 9am-4pm; on Thursdays sites close early at 3pm.

On their first day, volunteers receive an SBP Orientation at our warehouse and from there go directly to their work sites, where our Project Leads will give them a safety orientation, establish the goal for the day, and train volunteers on the tasks they will be performing. Every other day volunteers will go directly to their respective sites. On their final day, their assigned Volunteer Coordinator will visit the work site and lead the group in their Next Step Meeting, which is an opportunity to reflect on the work they've done and its impact, buy SBP shirts, and discuss ways they support our mission in PR even after they go back home.

Please let us know if you have any questions on the above and if there's anything else we can help you with!!
